Mommin Monday's

Back at with another Mommin Monday’s blog post!! You can read last week’s here.

Today I am sharing my insights on why hiring a doula was the best decision ever during my pregnancy.

So what exactly is a doula? According to DONA, a doula is “a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.”

Who was our Doula? Her name is Liz Boyce and my birth photographer Nicole recommended her to Spencer and I. We initially connected with her through email and we did so very early on in my pregnancy. We decided that we would meet in person to ensure that she was a great fit for our family. From our first meeting in Barnes & Noble, I knew she would be the one to be by our sides as new parents. I loved that she had a sense of humor which meshed very well with Spencer. I also enjoyed that she didn’t take things too seriously.

When it came time for Bear to make his debut, she made herself available and was quick to respond to our texts. She helped Spencer in guiding me into laboring positions and even gave him breaks during the labor. She stayed after his birth for a little while and checked in with us pretty frequently once we got home. Around week 3 she did a postpartum check-in and answered any questions we had. Reminded us that we are still learning the new rhythm of life and to not put so much pressure on ourselves.

I think no matter what your birth plan is, having a doula was hands down the best experience during our labor and delivery. Even in the weeks after. If you are on the fence about hiring a doula, I say jump it and get one. Just make sure she is someone whom both you and your spouse can connect with. She is not there just to support moms, but also the dads. Goodluck on your search and don’t hesitate to email me with any questions!!
